1832-1844

1832 – Deacon Samuel Kelley establishes a Baptist church in Calais

1841 – The Washington County Baptist Association gives permission for the founding of Second Baptist Church

1842 – The church begins meeting, with E. D. Very as its first minister

1844 – Second Baptist’s first church building, on Point Street (now Main Street) is completed.

And so it begins...

Not having a church building of their own, they met for worship in Goodnow’s Hall (on what is now Main Street, close to the present location of the Camden National Bank).

In March of 1843, the church purchased a lot just a short ways down Point Street (now Main Street) from where they were meeting in Goodnow’s Hall. Their new property was directly across from the mouth of Monroe Street

E. D. Very – 1842-1843

Rev. Edward D. Very, who had transferred from the First Baptist Church along with the other departing members, became the first pastor in the history of this new church.
